What does the evidence say?
A meta-analysis published in Sports Medicine (2022) found that just two to five minutes of light walking after eating significantly lowers post-meal glucose spikes[1]. And crucially: walking immediately after a meal has a greater effect than walking after a longer interval or before the meal[1].
A study in Scientific Reports compared a ten-minute walk immediately after glucose ingestion with a thirty-minute walk starting half an hour later[2] — concluding that walking immediately after a meal, even briefly, may be effective[2].

Why does it work?
Because working muscles draw glucose from the blood directly — without waiting for the full insulin signal. Walking does for your body part of what a medication does, at the very moment glucose actually rises.
Why does it matter for us specifically?
Because our region has the world's highest diabetes prevalence at 18.1% (the numbers), and because our habit after a heavy lunch is an immediate nap — the worst possible timing.
How to apply it in your day
- After lunch: a short loop in the office or around the house before your nap.
- After dinner: a ten-minute walk — it serves both glucose and sleep (late-night eating).
- After a gathering: instead of sitting straight down to dessert, take a short loop first (majlis calories).
- And it counts towards your steps: three short walks a day ≈ 3,000 steps (how many you need).
