Our society eats late — dinner at ten or eleven is the rule, not the exception. And science has begun to measure the cost precisely.
The key trial
A randomised crossover trial published in Cell Metabolism compared eating the same calories early versus late in adults with overweight and obesity. The result: late eating increased hunger, modified appetite-regulating hormones, decreased daytime energy expenditure, and altered adipose gene expression consistent with increased fat formation and decreased fat breakdown[1].

And on glucose and lipids
A crossover trial comparing a 6 p.m. dinner with a 10 p.m. dinner found late eating raised blood glucose, delayed the triglyceride peak, and reduced dietary fat oxidation — without altering sleep architecture[2]. Other studies found that people eating at night had higher carbohydrate oxidation and lower fat oxidation[3].
But — and scientific honesty requires this
Current evidence is limited by short durations, small samples and heterogeneous protocols, and needs long, large trials to establish causality[4]. So we don't say "late dinner makes you fat" categorically — we say the direction is clear and the mechanism plausible.
What to do in our reality?
- Move dinner one hour earlier: from 10:30 to 9:30 is a socially achievable change.
- Make lunch the heavier meal: if dinner is an unavoidable social event, lighten its size.
- Don't compensate with a post-midnight snack: the worst window of all.
