The Practical Ramadan Guide: Iftar, Suhoor and Movement — With the Evidence

We previously covered the science of Ramadan weight — that the loss is about 1.24 kg and 80% of it returns. This article is the practical plan to prevent that.

Iftar: the order makes the difference

  1. A date or three, and water — dates have a low glycaemic index (43–55 in the studied varieties)[1], but quantity changes the glycaemic load (details).
  2. Pray Maghrib before the main plate — a natural pause that gives satiety signals time.
  3. Soup then salad: soup before a meal cut its energy by 20% in a controlled trial[2] — and lentil soup is already a Ramadan staple.
  4. Then the main dish — protein first, less rice.
  5. Eat slowly: slow eaters are 42% less likely to have obesity[3] — the hardest part of iftar and the most important.

Suhoor: protein and fibre

The purpose of suhoor isn't fullness but extended satiety. Satiety correlates positively with protein, fibre and water, and negatively with fat[4]:

Water: the window is short

Distribute fluids between iftar and suhoor — don't rely on thirst alone. Water before a meal specifically is supported by randomised trials (the evidence). And remember that sweetened Ramadan drinks are weakly satiating liquid calories (why).

Movement: timing is the solution

The biggest trap: after Eid

The evidence is clear: the loss shrinks to just 0.27 kg two to six weeks after Ramadan[6]. So:

  1. Plan Eid before Ramadan — not after.
  2. The goal for the following six weeks: maintain, don't lose.
  3. Return to logging on the first day after Eid — not a week later.
🌙 Bottom line: Ramadan gives you a documented head start. The difference between those who keep it and those who lose it isn't in the month — it's in the six weeks that follow.
