What does short-term evidence say?
Short-term human studies suggest that calories consumed in liquid form have weak satiety properties and elicit poor energy compensation compared with calories from solid foods[1]. Pooled analyses of acute preload trials suggest that liquid calories from sugars are more poorly compensated than solid calories[1].
The proposed mechanism: the body does not "perceive" liquid calories — so they promote less satiety, less energy compensation and more weight gain than the same energy in solid form[1].

And honestly: the picture isn't closed
The evidence that liquids are less satiating than solids remains inconclusive — some studies found the opposite[2]. More importantly, results from acute preload trials should not be extrapolated to conclude that liquids cause long-term weight gain[1]. When adults were required to consume sweetened beverages as additional energy, dose-dependent weight gain occurred — but it was less than half what mathematical models predicted, implying most of the energy was compensated for over time[1].
So why write about it?
Because "partial" compensation is not full compensation — and more importantly, the PREMIER trial found that reducing sweetened beverage consumption is associated with weight loss[3]. The intervention works in practice regardless of how precisely we explain the mechanism.
