A fixed ritual after every workout: stretching to avoid "the ache". The evidence says this ritual doesn't do what we think.
What is DOMS?
Delayed onset muscle soreness is a transient, exercise-induced condition characterised by pain, stiffness and functional impairment, typically appearing 24–72 hours after eccentric or high-intensity exercise[1].
And stretching?
A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials found no effect of post-exercise stretching on soreness at 24, 48 or 72 hours compared with passive recovery[2]. The available data were described as scarce, heterogeneous, with very low confidence in the cumulative evidence[2].
The researchers' conclusion is explicit: evidence-based recommendations on using post-exercise stretching for recovery should be avoided, because the available data do not support such claims[2]. Compared with no intervention, no statistically significant effect of stretching techniques on DOMS-related pain was demonstrated[3].

"No pain, no gain"? Another error
Soreness indicates the novelty or intensity of a stimulus — not workout quality and not muscle growth. Beginners ache from everything; advanced lifters may not ache while still progressing. The real measure is progressive overload (volume and frequency).
What actually helps
- Progression: don't jump in weight or volume — this is the best prevention.
- Repetition: the body adapts fast — the second session of the same workout hurts far less.
- Light movement: gentle walking on a rest day usually eases the sensation.
- Sleep and protein: the actual foundation of recovery (sleep · protein).
