What these numbers mean practically
For illustration rather than recommendation: for someone weighing 80 kg the studied range equals 240–480 mg. For comparison, a dose of 1–2 mg/kg equals one to two cups of coffee for most people[3] — meaning reaching 3–6 mg/kg requires several cups or a supplement. This reports what the studies used, not a dose recommended for you personally — and for anyone with a health condition, the decision belongs with a doctor.
And what exactly does it improve?
Caffeine intake enhances multiple performance components: strength, power, aerobic and muscular endurance[2]. In resistance training, both 3 and 6 mg/kg significantly improved lower-body muscle strength, with peak force during repeated contractions increasing at 6 mg/kg specifically[2].
A study in female athletes found 6 mg/kg outperformed 3 mg/kg across all performance outcomes[1].
Important cautions
- Don't raise the dose assuming more is better: in the same study, 9 mg/kg did not outperform 6[1].
- Don't casually mix it with energy drinks — a can may carry 500 mg alongside sugar (the numbers).
- Watch your sleep: late caffeine steals your sleep — and short sleep raises obesity risk (the evidence).
- And it doesn't burn fat by itself: caffeine alone has no significant effect on weight (details).
