30 to 60 Minutes of Lifting a Week: The Dose Linked to the Lowest Mortality Risk

You don't need hours in the gym. The evidence points to an effective dose far smaller than most people assume — and with a ceiling.

The numbers

A systematic review and meta-analysis found that any resistance training — compared with none — reduced all-cause mortality risk by 15%, cardiovascular mortality by 19%, and cancer mortality by 14%[1].

The optimal dose: about 30–60 minutes a week is associated with the maximum risk reduction for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease[1], with a maximum reduction of 27% observed around 60 minutes a week[2].

And the ceiling of benefit

No additional benefit on mortality was observed beyond 120 minutes a week of strength training[2]. (A newer analysis places the optimal range at 90–120 minutes a week[3] — a difference between estimates that is normal in this kind of research.)

The most practically important point

The lowest mortality risk was seen among people who combined high levels of aerobic exercise with strength training[2] — meaning the question isn't "weights or cardio" but "how do I combine them" (the comparison · steps).

Translate it into your schedule

  1. Two sessions × 25 minutes a week = squarely inside the optimal range.
  2. Compound movements: squat, push, pull, carry — full-body coverage in less time.
  3. No gym needed: body weight and resistance bands start the journey.
  4. Benefit begins from zero: "any amount" beats none — don't wait for the perfect programme.

Note too that the American Heart Association issued an updated scientific statement (2023) on resistance exercise in individuals with and without cardiovascular disease[4] — meaning it is not restricted to the healthy, but cardiac patients should begin under medical supervision.

🏋️ Bottom line: Half an hour of lifting a week — less than one TV episode — is linked to a 15% reduction in mortality risk. The cheapest health investment available to you.
