Eating Slowly: Slow Eaters Are 42% Less Likely to Have Obesity

One intervention that costs nothing and forbids no food: eat the same plate — just more slowly.

The numbers

A systematic review and meta-analysis reviewing six longitudinal and fifteen cross-sectional studies found that eating speed is associated with BMI, and that non-fast eaters have a significantly lower BMI than fast eaters[1], with an association also between waist circumference and eating speed[1].

Per a medical review from the University of Chicago, slow eaters are 42% less likely to have obesity than fast eaters, and moderate-speed eaters are 29% less likely to be overweight[2].

Why does it work?

Two documented reasons:

  1. Fewer calories: earlier studies link slow consumption to lower energy intake[1] — because the satiety signal needs time to arrive.
  2. Higher burn: oral stimuli from tasting and chewing significantly increase diet-induced thermogenesis, which may help prevent weight gain and obesity[3].

Communal eating from a single platter creates an unspoken race — the faster you go, the more you take. Add eating in front of screens and rushed meals between errands.
