A Saudi Study: Delivery-App Users Are 360% More Likely to Eat Fast Food

Delivery is a genuine convenience — but it is also the most dangerous change to our table in ten years, and the Saudi figures are striking.

What did the studies find?

A cross-sectional study of 989 people in Saudi Arabia found 87.5% use food delivery apps, that 86.6% of them are most likely to order fast food, and that fast-food consumption is 360% more likely among delivery-service users[1]. A study across the Arab region linked heavy use of delivery platforms to dietary pattern disruption, altered meal routines and a preference for fatty foods[2].

Why apps specifically?

Because they remove every point of friction: no driving, no waiting, not even a phone call. And the decision is made while you're hungry, scrolling through professionally enhanced photos in a moment of weakness. Add discounts and subscriptions that make ordering feel like "a loss if I don't use it".

And note: calorie display works

A Saudi study on teachers in Riyadh examined the effect of displaying calories on restaurant menus on fast-food consumption[3] — which explains the decision to mandate calorie display: the information alone changes the choice.

Five rules for smart delivery

  1. Don't order while very hungry: drink water and wait ten minutes before opening the app.
  2. Read the displayed calories: they're now mandatory — use them; they're more accurate than your guess.
  3. Turn off notifications: 9 p.m. offers are no accident.
  4. Make it a planned decision: once or twice a week at a known time, not a momentary response to hunger.
  5. Log it: photograph the order when it arrives — a logged meal is managed; a forgotten one accumulates.
🛵 Bottom line: We won't ask you to delete the apps — only to be the one deciding, rather than the notification that reached you while you were tired at night.
